We support, participate in, and are dedicated to many charitable and nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve and beyond. By educating our staff and attorneys about these organizations, our Firm's efforts allow us to represent clients more effectively and efficiently, achieving quality results. Through the Thompson & Knight Foundation, we lend financial support to hundreds of civic and charitable organizations advocating diversity, the arts, education, the elderly, health care, youth mentoring, and other similarly focused programs. The success of the Foundation, formed more than 20 years ago, is immeasurable. In addition, we encourage our employees to lead balanced lives through public involvement, pro bono work, and charitable giving. Without the time and effort of our employees, we would not be able to make so many important commitments to the community.
Through the years, the Firm has engaged in a number of activities reflecting our commitment to community. We have built a Habitat for Humanity house in memory of a colleague, organized clothing drives for victims of natural disasters, and commemorated the Firm's anniversary by commissioning a law office in a historic Dallas park. In addition to our philanthropic work, Thompson & Knight attorneys and staff contribute countless hours to a wide spectrum of efforts as well as volunteer for and serve as board members of community organizations. We believe these positions shape our cities and drive them to a productive future.
Thompson & Knight is honored to be the recipient of the 2008 Obelisk Award for Arts Partnership by the North Texas Business for Culture and the Arts. Specifically, Thompson & Knight was acknowledged for our generous, long-term support of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The Arts Partnership Award recognizes businesses that have demonstrated leadership and provided outstanding overall support for at least three years to at least one North Texas arts and cultural organization. Thompson & Knight previously won this award in 1994.
Pro bono and other community service activities are an important professional responsibility. Thompson & Knight has been honored with the Firm of the Year for Extraordinary Pro Bono Service Award at the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program Annual Pro Bono Awards and Volunteer Recognition Event. The Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program has also awarded the Firm two pro bono awards for the significant hours we spend in support of the South Dallas Legal Clinic. In addition, Thompson & Knight has been recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in the small business category by the Volunteer Center of Dallas County for the Firm's continuous pro bono service to the Housing Crisis Center.
Through particular focus and meaningful efforts, Thompson & Knight is becoming the diversity and inclusion model for our communities. We were the first Houston law firm to join the "Community of Respect" program of the Anti-Defamation League. The program provides tools and resources to help Houston-area organizations fight prejudice, bigotry and discrimination, and engender respect and appreciation for diversity.
